Penguins Encounter

You can’t walk among the penguins, but in the indoor Penguin Encounter it does not feel as though you are in southern California so it is easy to imagine that you are in the Antarctic. Nearly 300 penguins of several different species are on display.

Sea World & Mission Bay from Sky Tower

If you don’t mind heights, the best way to get a feel for the layout of of SeaWorld is to take a trip up the Sky Tower. The rotating cabin climbs to the top of the pole giving you a great view all around albeit slightly obstructed by the cables that carry lights up the tower.

Dolphin Feeding

At Rocky Point Preserve it is possible at set times to join in the task of feeding the dolphins. It is one of the best ways to get close to a dolphin without getting (too) wet.

SeaWorld

We don’t usually include Theme Parks in 50 Plus DC, but SeaWorld is a little different. Yes, it has rides and shows but it also serves the serious purpose of showing people sea life. The SeaWorld marine life park was the brainchild of four UCLA graduates and SeaWorld San Diego was their first park, opening in 1964 with little more than sea lions and dolphins. Within 10 years they had become famous for their Orca (Killer Whale) called Shamu and had opened two more parks in Ohio and Orlando, Florida. The business was sold in 1976 and in 1988 the new owners opened a park in San Antonio, Texas. SeaWorld is now part of the Anheuser-Busch group who sold off the Ohio park in 2001 and it is no longer a marine life park.

'Fools with Tools' Sea Lion Show

The name of the show has since changed, but Sea Lion shows are all fairly similar. Don’t forget that if you sit near the front you will get very wet!

Flamingoes

Flamingo Cove has plenty of Caribbean Flamingoes to show off. You can even buy bird food and feed them yourself.

- A theme park with an educational side - that’s good!

- Considering that we are not fans of theme parks, we are surprised to say that we have no gripes.
